Art time – a visit from Politechnika Białostocka Hajnówka Wita May 25, 2022

THE AREA AROUND THE BUILDING OF THE FORMER RAILWAY STATION IN HAJNÓWKA IS NOT ATTRACTIVE TO YOUNG PEOPLE

HOWEVER THEY HAVE A LOT OF IDEAS HOW TO CHANGE IT

The place should be well lit, and well-hardened and well-lit track for roller skating would also be useful. And more benches, tables, maybe a covered gazebo. The young people would also like the rope park. These are just some of the ideas they reported during the Saturday meeting.

As we have already written, the meeting that took place on May 21 at Hajnówka Centralna – the Cultural Station is an important element of the recently announced ART TIME competition. It is aimed at students of architecture from the Białystok University of Technology. Their task is to create around Dworcowa street – an attractive space for young people. It is a fairly large area located between the tracks, stretching from the footbridge to Warszawska street.

THE AREA AROUND THE STATION IS MEANT TO INVITE, NOT FRIGHTEN

The space you design is to be a showcase of Hajnówka. This is supposed to be a place that everyone who comes to the city will see. This place is to show guests what to expect from a unique city bordering the Białowieża Primeval Forest on its eastern side. At the moment, the space shows nothing. And it is not very attractive to young people. Volunteers from Primary School No. 2, as well as a group of students from Primary School No. 3 and the Vocational School Complex, had their opinion.

Actually, I don't come here at all. I have nothing to do here.

Viviane from Primary School no. 2

What would have to change to come here? Maybe if there was a place to skate. The kind with even asphalt and necessarily lit. Many other students also pointed to the lighting. Now it’s dark in here and uncomfortable. And in spring and summer, young people would like to have some “night life”. A meeting place where you could invite friends or guests from another city. Where would be nice and safe.

What else would be useful here? Certainly more benches, tables, gazebo. Also, movement attractions such as a rope park, a climbing wall. Some would like to go crazy artistically and would see a wall here, or another place where, for example, graffiti could be painted with impunity. Of course, there must also be charging points for phones and bicycle paths.

A space with potential, but cut off from the city

After seeing the area, the students of the Białystok University of Technology shared their first thoughts. They stated that it is an area in the city center, but at the same time cut off from that city. So it would be good to make it a kind of “gate” to Hajnówka. That there are a lot of trees here, some of them very old. Unfortunately, the space, despite its potential, has no function and is not used.

On Saturday, 19 students came to Hajnówka, although the entire group of people interested in the competition amounts to 35 people. The authors of the three winning projects can count on cash prizes. The competition prize is 3.5 thousand zloty. Importantly, the winning project will be included in the development of design and construction documentation to be prepared in the first quarter of next year.

A part of you will stay in this place. I think this is the best award for an architect. In addition, students' projects will be on display at the exhibition in Hajnówka Centralna, and perhaps also in other places in the city.

Land inventory before young architects. Students are still waiting for more suggestions from young people.

The contest will be resolved in October.
