Competition for developing a concept of a new city center
There is no first place. There are first and second and seven honorable mentions – four with a cash prize and three honorable mentions. The participants are from all over Poland, and a total of 25 works were submitted.
Recall that the competition concerned an area located in the center of Hajnówka. In the immediate vicinity of the area are the main city park with an amphitheater, the city office, the parish church, the train station and the swimming pools. Its results will be used to further discuss the appearance and function of the city center and to formulate guidelines for the creation of a local development plan.
Last week, a jury meeting was held. Its members included:
- Andrzej Jaworski, chairman of the court, architect, co-owner of the JAZ studio
- Anna Lebiedzińska-Łuksza, deputy chairman of the court, urban planner, deputy head of the Building and Investment Department of the Hajnówka City Hall
- Łukasz Pancewicz, referee, urban planner, assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Gdansk University of Technology
- Halina Łapińska, Ph.D., professor of arch. at the Białystok University of Technology, urban planner
- Ireneusz Kiendyś, M.Sc. in construction, Deputy Mayor of the City of Hajnówka
- Agnieszka Kowalewska, judge, landscape architect, urban planner, member of TUP and ISOCARP
- Paweł Wojdylak, judge, architect-urbanist, advisor to cities of the Association of Polish Cities

We already know the decision of the jury. It decided that none of the submitted works, and there were 25 of them, fully corresponded to the requirements of the contracting authority and did not award the main prize.
The works selected for the second and third prizes were those that responded in the most comprehensive way possible to the design task set in the competition, which was to shape the urban structure consisting of public spaces, buildings and greenery in the new city center, and correctly shaped the relationship between these elements, as well as with the surroundings. Of the remaining works, those were selected that contained selected solutions that were particularly valuable from the point of view of formulating planning guidelines or that made a significant contribution to the discussion of the directions of development of the new city center. The jury decided to award four equal honorable mentions (with a cash prize).
On the other hand, we are pleased by the great interest in the competition and the diversity of ideas. Architects and urban planners from Łódź, Szczecin or Poznań, but also Hajnówka and Białystok took part. Recall that the prize pool was PLN 50,000. Here are the winners:
